This morning @ 7:30am I received my first of many phone calls. The first was from the Young Women's President, whom I serve with, letting me know to call my girls and tell them church was cancelled due to the 14 inches of snow we had received during the night. I began to call my girls and phone call #2 came in, from my visiting teaching supervisor, letting me know that church was not cancelled but to use my own discretion. During that call another call came in from my visiting teacher so she proceeded to leave a message that said, "church was optional today". After listening to that message call #4 came in from the high priest group leader that church was cancelled. So many different calls with varying messages and one choice to make. The kids were up, I was almost ready, and so we continued to get ready.
The temp was 32 when we headed out. The roads had not been plowed yet. Luckily, someone had traveled them previously and had made a perfect path for us to follow. We arrived to church 10 minutes early and enjoyed listening to the prelude music. We enjoyed sacrament meeting with 10 other families that were able to come. It was a small yet inspiring testimony meeting. We had one deacon (out of 14) 2 teachers, and 3 priest, who prepared, blessed and passed the sacrament. After sacrament we combined the YW (since we only had 1 out 30) with the relief society making it a total of 7. We studied the lesson from the Joseph Smith Manual. With 7 individuals sharing their thoughts and insights I left feeling inspired and uplifted.
What a unique experience to worship with a handful of members from our ward and to be spiritually taught and edified. Church optional? I think not.
